Fairtrade munja and sari bird nesters have been fashioned in India using reclaimed sari fabric from factory offcuts that has been gathered and washed, and then artfully crafted together with sustainably sourced munja – making these bird nesters a unique and environmentally friendly home for your garden birds. Each is supported by a strong metal frame and your bird nester has been designed to last outside in all weather. The entrance hole diameter has been custom measured to suit British small birds like tits and robins, whilst helping to keep larger predator birds out and frustrate squirrels.

Each bird nester is unique and whilst the shape and size will be consistent, sari fabric colours will vary. Munja is a tough Asiatic grass (saccharum munja) whose tenacious culms are used for ropes, twine, and baskets, with great natural water repellant abilities. It is sustainably sourced from across India.

See, Hear, Respond

In 2020 Barnardo’s worked collaboratively with the Department of Education, to develop the ‘See, Hear, Respond’ programme. The purpose of the programme was to support vulnerable children and families that had been gravely affected by the Covid pandemic, and its associated lockdowns.

Working with a network of local partners, the programme generated over 15,000 referrals from vulnerable children and their families who were suffering from mental health problems, isolation and loneliness, issues with going back to school and parenting difficulties.

A key objective was to intervene at an early stage, before these problems became exacerbated and caused additional harm, or led to a crisis situation.

Support was delivered by Barnardo’s, and a network of 82 delivery partners, to a total of 43,114 children and young people in the UK; the main groups were children under 5, children with educational needs or disabilities, children at risk of exploitation, children from BAME refugee groups, young carers and children with mental health needs.

A Digital Resource Hub was set up, that supported our key delivery strands of: Providing advice and support online,  face to face interventions and group work, and by working collaboratively with schools and their networks to support the re-integration of children into school. According to the Impact Evaluation Report produced by Cordis Bright, 98% of families said the support was helpful, and that they felt listened to, 7,331 children had reduced isolation and loneliness and 2,263 children became more settled at school.

“This was the best and quickest help we’ve had.” – Caitlin, year 8 student.
