We’re thrilled to introduce our brand new Wild Meadow Collection, an exclusive collaboration with UK illustrator and pattern designer Melissa Donne. Bursting with spring colours, delicate and expressive florals, this collection encapsulates the joy and calm of a blooming British meadow.
Melissa is based on the South Coast of the UK and is celebrated for her playful, bold, colour-driven design style. Her approach brings this collection to life with fresh energy and a sense of sanctuary. As she describes it: “I am thrilled to be part of this exclusive collaboration with Barnardo’s and to know that this collection will contribute to their amazing work with children and young people.”
To get a deeper look into the creative process behind the Wild Meadow collection, we sat down with Melissa for a chat about her inspiration, process, and favourite pieces.
Question 1: Where did the inspiration for this collection come from? Was there a particular moment, idea, or feeling that first sparked it?
Melissa:
I was initially inspired by Thomas Barnardo’s garden of Goldings in Hertfordshire and the idea that gardens and nature can have a therapeutic effect, so I envisioned a sprawling floral meadow full of colour and joy. I loved the idea of a sanctuary, which of course gardens can be to so many people, and to create something peaceful and delicate.
This led to the development of a striking colour palette and a range of flowers that had a slightly abstract feel, which is very typical of my work. I knew I wanted to find a balance between something playful but also elegant, as well as being indicative of Spring. I started by picking flowers that are typical of that time of year and the artwork began to take shape after that.
Question 2: What does your creative process usually look like, and what tools do you use to bring your ideas to life?
Melissa:
My work and all of my creative practice is underpinned by my love of colour, so beginning with a strong palette is always an essential part of my process. I wanted to incorporate part of Barnardo’s colours but additionally also pretty pastel shades with a pop of colour. This came from the Poppy motif with its bold red shades which sits beautifully with the more pastel colours in the artwork.
Moving on from colour, I then started sketching, before transferring the sketches to my iPad and working digitally, adding colour further down the line. I then created the pattern initially on my iPad and moved to my computer to finalise the artwork. It is a smooth process for me and one which I’ve honed over years of practice.
Question 3:What excited you most about creating an exclusive collection with us?
Melissa:
I think the most exciting aspect of any collaborative project is working closely with people invested in the collection, and everyone feeling excited and motivated to create something special.
It was clear from the outset that this would be an extensive collection and would truly be an artist collaboration with my name attached to it. I think this is every artist’s dream and to have a collection with such a renowned charity made it even better.
When you’re designing artwork you don’t always know what products it will end up on, so there was an element of anticipation and surprise which I loved. I also knew that the theme and season for the collection was very typical of my style so I was excited about bringing my skills and experience to the project.
Question 4: Why was it important for you to work with Barnardo’s on this collaboration?
Melissa:
When I was contacted by Barnardo’s to work on the collection, I was so excited at the prospect! I was familiar with the amazing work Barnardo’s do and also a big fan of their charity shops so it really was such a proud moment to be able to contribute the artwork for their new range, and I can’t wait to see it online and in stores.
One of the most satisfying aspects of my work is seeing my designs brought to life on products, and I’m very proud of the pattern and illustrations I created and all the wonderful items in the range that carry it.
Question 5: Do you have a favourite piece from the collection? If so, what makes it special to you?
Melissa:
Well, I’m completely in love with all of it so that’s a tricky one! I’m a massive stationery addict and will buy a notebook (or two) without needing an excuse. So I love the mini notebooks and also the pens which are a great accompaniment.
I’ve been struck by how vibrant the colours are in the products and I’m obsessed with the mint green background! It’s all so beautiful and I’m just thrilled to have been a part of it.
A huge thank you to Melissa for bringing her vibrant imagination and overflowing creativity to this collaboration! Melissa’s Wild Meadow collection is available to purchase now online and in selected stores.
