Bradford College student Jude Gentry has breathed new life into one of fashion’s most enduring staples: denim. His collection, Upcycled Punk – The Art of Denim, draws on the rebellious spirit of punk while championing sustainability through creative reuse of old jeans, tattered shorts and scrap fabrics.
Jude began by deconstructing ripped and stained denim pieces, then reconstructing them with unexpected details. Floral pyjama tops and toile de jouy fabrics were cleverly overlocked and stitched into jeans and shorts, creating a playful tension between tough, rugged denim and delicate, decorative textiles. He also experimented with new silhouettes by removing parts of garments, reshaping them into something entirely fresh.
The most challenging element was crafting flared trousers using floral pyjama fabric, a process that required meticulous pattern work. Yet through perseverance, Jude transformed discarded materials into a bold statement of upcycled creativity.
Jude’s work is influenced by the punk scene and the iconic designs of Vivienne Westwood, whose rebellious spirit reshaped fashion forever. He also draws inspiration from John Galliano and high-energy runway fashion, combining drama with wearability. This eclectic blend of influences underpins Jude’s evolving design style, which values experimentation, individuality and the power of transformation.
“I like to think my style as a designer varies. I am really interested in the punk scene, inspired by a lot of Vivienne Westwood’s work. I also enjoy the works of John Galliano, and have a great fascination of runway fashion.” – Jude Gentry
Through this collection, Jude proves that sustainability can be daring, bold and unapologetically stylish. By giving new life to damaged garments and discarded fabrics, he highlights the creative possibilities of upcycled fashion while raising awareness of the waste challenges facing the industry.
