At Bradford College, student and designer Olivia Jaimie Watson has proved how your everyday items can be turned into something incredible. Her final piece, part of the Slumber Fest collection takes sustainable to a new level, showcasing how her creativity and use of upcycling can breathe new life into once forgotten materials.
Olivia’s jacket began it’s life as bedding. Set on making a thick, cosy garment, she used wadding and quilting techniques to add structure to the jacket and create warmth. This wasn’t a simple process, taking a few goes before getting the jacket was just right, but the perseverance really shows in Olivia’s final piece. To balance the patterns, corduroy panels were cleverly added, coming together for a comfortable yet striking design.
This unique jacket features an exaggerated collar that really reflects Olivia’s passion for more Avant Garde fashion. The bold floral patterns help ensure that this jacket stands out, bringing a splash of colour and an air of confidence to any outfit. Staying to the projects sustainable ethos, Olivia fashioned a matching reversible bucket hat using the remaining leftover fabric, making sure nothing was wasted, and the look was complete.
Olivia’s design ethos is shaped by her admiration for Alexander McQueen, and his provoking and dramatic creations, which have helped inspire her to embrace the weird, the wonderful and the unapologetically bold.
