About The Re-Fashion Hub

Our Story

Barnardo’s officially launched The Re-Fashion Hub in June 2024, an upcycling workshop with the first based in our Bradford Superstore, Forster Square Retail Park. Following a successful pilot, we opened the second Re-Fashion Hub in our Sutton Coldfield Superstore, Princess Alice Retail Park, in May 2025.

Whilst a large proportion of the pre-loved clothing that has kindly been donated to Barnardo’s is resold across our c.550 retail stores, some of the items we receive are unfortunately in unsuitable conditions. The Re-Fashion Hub is a space for our creative Re-Fashion Volunteers to repair, treat and upcycle donated textiles that are either damaged, too worn, or deemed unsuitable for resale in their current state.

Volunteers Breathe New Life into Preloved Items

Volunteers give these items a new lease of life – either as the same product with clean ups and repairs or redesigned and upcycled into something completely new. Singer Sewing Machines very kindly donated six sewing machines to each of the hubs and Miele donated a commercial washing machine so that volunteers can wash out any stains where possible.

The products that are rescued or upcycled in the hub are then resold across our retail stores. This not only supports our sustainability goals by significantly reducing the number of textiles we send for recycling, but it also generates additional revenue for Barnardo’s, enabling us to support even more children, young people and families that need our help.

Sustainable Innovation: Barnardo’s Re-Fashion Hub Model

This project was set up with a zero-spend budget and is ran by volunteers meaning it is 100% profit for Barnardo’s. The space also aims to be zero waste as any textiles completely at the end of life can be shredded to make stuffing or industrial wipers which can be sold to local mechanics.

Barnardo’s Retail Sustainability Team hope to introduce further Re-Fashion Hubs across the UK in the future and would also like to host small community events such as sewing clubs, repair services, ‘how to’ workshops and other upcycling classes.
